The first phase

The first phase started by making models.

My initial assumptions about the future of the Netherlands held considerable sway in the project’s early phases. This predominantly involved crafting imaginative models with a relaxed approach. During this stage, emphasis remained on the broader idea of amphibian living, without delving deeply into detailed research or extensive exploration of what this future might entail.

The second phase

The second phase started by an in-depth research into climate adaptation in the Netherlands.

During my research, I came to the realization that the story needed to be uniquely tailored to the Netherlands, grounded in reality and informed by thorough research. However, it didn’t necessarily have to adhere strictly to realism. Furthermore, I aimed to steer clear of overly dystopian themes, opting instead for an optimistic and humorous narrative. While I wanted to avoid veering into overly utopian territory, the story should maintain a balanced tone, offering an uplifting and entertaining perspective.

Making a puppet

While the animation showed some rough edges, I found there was sufficient progress to warrant continuing down the animation path.

However, upon review, I wasn’t entirely satisfied with all aspects of the animation. Particularly, the animated folding mechanism—intended to transform into a table—proved to be problematic. Its relevance to the theme of the future of the Netherlands was unclear.

In light of this, I made the decision to pivot from furniture to a puppet. I felt that a character representing a Dutch individual from the future would better serve the narrative. Thus, I began crafting my stop-motion puppet.

Storyboard

At this point, I began storyboarding,

While numerous details underwent changes, including format, presentation, and even the inclusion or exclusion of entire scenes, the core concept and vision for the animation remained consistent from this point forward.

Objects

With the story more Les figured out I decided that I also would like to make physical work alongside the motion animated film.

In one of my models I made a wall which became more beautiful when it got wet. A wall that becomes more beautiful when it gets wet was one of the physical objects that I wanted to make in one-to-one scale up. I played around with tiles and wallpaper. In the end settled on wallpaper.

Real size stilts

The second object I decided to build where the stilts.

This means making wooden stilts from about 6 meter hi. It is all about storytelling so this means that if I would make the stelts it needs to be in the Ride way and from the right Wood from the right place.

I decided on ash wood. It is traditionally used for making ladders and broom handles. It is very strong. The only downside is that it discolors when it becomes wet. However I saw this quality only as an opportunity for weathering Techniques later on.

Adapting to climate change can also be exciting and will trigger new, progressive ideas..

The Netherlands is facing big challenges due to climate change. One of the more nature-centered and exciting solutions to these problems would be to allow more water in Dutch landscapes. However, this is in direct conflict with the dutch narrative concerning water. The Dutch have been fighting water for as long as the Netherlands existed. In fact, fighting water became quite a big part of the Dutch national identity. Within Dutch culture sayings like “God created the earth except for the Netherlands it’s made by the Dutch” are not uncommon. However shifting towards Living with, in and around water will also be a good thing. ‘Nat Land’ tries to shift from climate anxiety to enthusiasm towards the future, by using humor and light provocation
